It is interesting to note how our politicians apply agenda
setting, which is otherwise used by media. There is nothing wrong in setting an
agenda but it is more important to set forth the right agenda.

I do not want to make a mountain out of a molehill but the
fact about a large part of the Indian population still living below the poverty
line is not new. It is not new to the people of India; it is not new to the
ruling parties and obviously not new at all to the Opposition. It is a
different fact that when the same Opposition gets tagged as the ruling party,
poverty of farmers reaches a new low. This dirty politics has been doing the
rounds for a long time now.
Why only farmers’ woes? There are several other problems that
need to be addressed by both the ruling party and the Opposition as well.
Problems ranging from academics, healthcare facilities, infrastructure to job
availability and others need to be addressed by politicians. Many might debate
that every individual must take up the issues themselves and address them and
that not everything can be blamed on the government or its inaction. My
question is, then why did we select them as our representatives?
You must be thinking why I am saying all this. It is simply
because I want to draw your attention towards the entire issue of ‘Bharat Mata
Ki Jai’.
An uncalled for, unnecessary and unimportant agenda set by
the government, which I feel has been done to draw away the attention of society
from the extremely important and pertinent issues of the day. This view is
solely mine and I do not want anyone to buy it. (I would be happy though if you
do buy it J).

Some politician in Hyderabad says I will not say Bharat Mata
Ki Jai as the Constitution does not force me to do so and the government of the
day jumps in to score brownie points by slamming him. I ask, is it at all that
important an issue?
I might not like to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai to showcase my
patriotism but at the same time, I might rather go out and feed a hungry beggar
or stop a person from shamelessly peeing in the streets. It is my discretion as
to whether I would want to say Bharat Mata Ki Jai or not.
In India now, an attempt is being made to give a new
definition to patriotism. Some are trying to carve out a staunch meaning for
the word negating all related but valid deviations. Chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai
or sporting the Indian flag on one’s chest does not make one patriotic. If true
patriotism needs to be shown then stopping an unnecessary private extravaganza
at the cost of nature like Art of Living’s World Culture Festival on the bank
of Yamuna in Delhi is important.

The Prime Minister wanted us to believe what Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar said about creating awareness for a cleaner Yamuna but I ask, are we
stupid? The entire cost of organising the event could actually have been used
to clean up Yamuna to a large extent. And do we see any volunteer or a bhakt of
babaji there now?
It is weird that our politicians consider us equal, when it
comes to intellect, and compare us with our rural counterparts. If patriotism
has to be shown, it has to be done in the manner our freedom fighters did. They
were not worried about any ‘wave’ or did not wait for any election to do good
work for the nation. Today we know the names of several freedom fighters but
there are many many more who were equally patriotic but never did they try to
shape patriotism according to them.
Addressing the issues of the day has become very important
today and I urge our government to do so without wasting time behind a stupid
issue of who is saying Bharat Mata Ki Jai or not.
The people talking about patriotism through words are
probably forgetting that it is not just a word or an expression which needs
words to support it. It is rather a feeling. And I say, there are better
patriots than you, there are people who understand patriotism better than you.
He who thinks his/her ideology is the end of the world has his face inside a
bucket and thus he/she cannot see the world outside the bucket.
It’s time we all rise, take a pledge and move ahead of all
stupidity that our politicians are engaging in and remind them of their duties.
Tell them why they have been elected to power, remind them that they are not
the leaders of their parties but rather of the country and finally remove them
from power if they do not listen to you.
Jai Hind!
