Bharat Mata Ki Jai: A forceful shying away from important issues

It is interesting to note how our politicians apply agenda setting, which is otherwise used by media. There is nothing wrong in setting an agenda but it is more important to set forth the right agenda.

I do not want to make a mountain out of a molehill but the fact about a large part of the Indian population still living below the poverty line is not new. It is not new to the people of India; it is not new to the ruling parties and obviously not new at all to the Opposition. It is a different fact that when the same Opposition gets tagged as the ruling party, poverty of farmers reaches a new low. This dirty politics has been doing the rounds for a long time now.
Why only farmers’ woes? There are several other problems that need to be addressed by both the ruling party and the Opposition as well. Problems ranging from academics, healthcare facilities, infrastructure to job availability and others need to be addressed by politicians. Many might debate that every individual must take up the issues themselves and address them and that not everything can be blamed on the government or its inaction. My question is, then why did we select them as our representatives?
You must be thinking why I am saying all this. It is simply because I want to draw your attention towards the entire issue of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.
An uncalled for, unnecessary and unimportant agenda set by the government, which I feel has been done to draw away the attention of society from the extremely important and pertinent issues of the day. This view is solely mine and I do not want anyone to buy it. (I would be happy though if you do buy it J).

Some politician in Hyderabad says I will not say Bharat Mata Ki Jai as the Constitution does not force me to do so and the government of the day jumps in to score brownie points by slamming him. I ask, is it at all that important an issue?
I might not like to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai to showcase my patriotism but at the same time, I might rather go out and feed a hungry beggar or stop a person from shamelessly peeing in the streets. It is my discretion as to whether I would want to say Bharat Mata Ki Jai or not.
In India now, an attempt is being made to give a new definition to patriotism. Some are trying to carve out a staunch meaning for the word negating all related but valid deviations. Chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai or sporting the Indian flag on one’s chest does not make one patriotic. If true patriotism needs to be shown then stopping an unnecessary private extravaganza at the cost of nature like Art of Living’s World Culture Festival on the bank of Yamuna in Delhi is important.

The Prime Minister wanted us to believe what Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said about creating awareness for a cleaner Yamuna but I ask, are we stupid? The entire cost of organising the event could actually have been used to clean up Yamuna to a large extent. And do we see any volunteer or a bhakt of babaji there now?
It is weird that our politicians consider us equal, when it comes to intellect, and compare us with our rural counterparts. If patriotism has to be shown, it has to be done in the manner our freedom fighters did. They were not worried about any ‘wave’ or did not wait for any election to do good work for the nation. Today we know the names of several freedom fighters but there are many many more who were equally patriotic but never did they try to shape patriotism according to them.
Addressing the issues of the day has become very important today and I urge our government to do so without wasting time behind a stupid issue of who is saying Bharat Mata Ki Jai or not.
The people talking about patriotism through words are probably forgetting that it is not just a word or an expression which needs words to support it. It is rather a feeling. And I say, there are better patriots than you, there are people who understand patriotism better than you. He who thinks his/her ideology is the end of the world has his face inside a bucket and thus he/she cannot see the world outside the bucket.
It’s time we all rise, take a pledge and move ahead of all stupidity that our politicians are engaging in and remind them of their duties. Tell them why they have been elected to power, remind them that they are not the leaders of their parties but rather of the country and finally remove them from power if they do not listen to you.
Jai Hind!

IS IT ISLAM THAT KILLS?

Terrorism, in the 21st century, is something that has not only shaken up all parts of the world but also has it brought bad name to the Muslims. People all the world over abuse the religion for giving birth to people who spread terror and kill innocents. And on top of that a new radical Muslim group springs up every now and then. But let us think about it rationally. Does all these incidents actually make the religion or so to say the the Quran a piece of shit? Consider a group of people forming a new radical group going about saying that their religion asks them to kill people, that their religion asks them to fight against the innocent. Does that mean we start believing that there is problem in the religious scripts of that religion? Anybody can claim anything, but we have been gifted with a mind which is supposed to be used rationally and not just follow arbitrary nincompoops. It is also baffling to see that whenever a terrorist attack takes place the media all over uses th...

Commonly used short forms and their meanings

Ever since the days of our arboreal ancestors, mankind has been trying to reduce effort by innovating new necessities. And the result is in front of our eyes today. We want pizza, it gets delivered to our place. We want grocery, it gets delivered to our place at our convenient time. This urge of humankind to reduce effort has actually helped us in many ways. Like, if our ancestors would not have made use of crude stone tools, we wouldn’t have been able to make the sophisticated equipment we used these days. Thus, everything undergoes change. However, in today’s world, we tend to forget willingly the etymology of the transformed form. Taking the point of reducing effort to another level, let me take you through the commonly-used abbreviations. We all use them, though in our childhood, our teachers used to scold us for using them, nonetheless we used them for our convenience. Using an abbreviation in this fast-paced life is okay but not knowing the origin of the same may pr...

Sangeet Som’s speech a dangerous premonition?

If there is presence of something today, then there has to be a past and this past is known as HISTORY. For example, if you have a metal idol in your hand, the matter was definitely in the form of an ore in some part of its journey. As for a country, well, knowledge about a State comes after reading about its History and to claim to change the same is dangerous and would ensure a dark future. BJP’s controversial lawmaker, Sangeet Som, who apparently paved way for the Muzaffarnagar riots, is back with yet another bizarre comment that he would change History. You may not like the idea that the Mughals ruled India for a long time but you can’t rub it off from History. After all, if your kid asks you who made the Taj Mahal, would you say that the Bharatiya Janata Party laid its foundation stone? His foolishness was also out in the open when he said that the one who built the Taj Mahal had imprisoned his father. Ehh wait a minute, Shah Jahan imprisoned Jahangir? Really? But t...
