Your boss has not bought you, so protest

I had long thought that I will abstain myself from scribbling my thoughts on this topic but a deep-rooted hatred urged me to finally voice my concerns.
I have always had more number of female friends than male ones and probably for this reason I am closer, than many of my friends, to the problems that a woman faces. A girlfriend or two of mine keep telling me that I am their girlfriend with whom they can share anything.
And this is wherefrom my source of agony often arises. Often my female friends confide in me things which ultimately have to be kept hushed up for no reason. Many of you know that I have joined a job just a year ago. So have my friends in different companies. Of late, a few of my female friends are complaining of workplace harassment. And this is irking me no ends with the only way for me to vent out being writing.
Decent, indecent, direct, indirect, verbal, physical, mental etc are a few of the many ways my friends are facing problems. And I believe many, at least 90%, of the working women across India face the same. Thus, keeping my friends’ identity secret but citing their examples nonetheless, I will today address those voiceless women who keep to themselves the tales of being harassed.
My direct aim is at those bosses who take the female employees for granted and from behind the virtual veil of chauvinism take pride or no shame in considering her to be a whore. Too blatant? Your expectations are worse than this.

It is weird how many bosses consider their position to be a gateway to a woman’s body. They think their position is such that nobody will ever talk back at them. They think they can put their weight behind their argument and prove innocence. But mind it, not for long is this possible. We should not forget what happened to ex-TERI chief R K Pachauri.
However, it is astonishing to also learn from a few women that they fear to open their mouths. And that’s precisely why a lot of these bosses take advantage of these women. There are, I believe, 99.9% women who hate being taken advantage of either sexually or otherwise in a workplace or any other place. Then why this silence?
I asked my friends and I am sure the ones reading this piece too will have their versions. Please let me know. My friends gave me vast and literally weird answers to this. Here’s a small list of such answers:-
·        It is better to keep quiet than to create a ruckus in the office. Better to keep it to myself rather than being the talking topic among the men in the office,
·        What if I am thrown out of the office?
·        What if my career is tarnished?
·        It’s ok, I’ll find another job soon,
·        What will society think about me? They will call me a slut.

After having heard all these, I have finally thought of answering them back. Had I been Arnab Goswami I would have reacted to the second and third points by saying: “Replying to a question with another question? That’s not fair.” But I will reply to all these today.

It is because of your silence and gullible nature that he makes you his target. Remember one thing, and this I say with a lot of guarantee, men are after all very scared when it comes to these things. It’s your silence that drives his confidence into considering you to be a slut. If you raise your voice and no one is beside you, the police, women’s cell, the DCW (if you happen to stay in Delhi), the courts, the janta janardhan will lend their ears. And if this list falls short, media will always stand beside you. But if you happen to be from the media yourself, then hey, I am sure you company must be having some or the other rival mediahouse.

If you are confident about yourself then do not forget, you had struggled much more during your birth. Thus, if you are thrown out of the office, then at least the rival company will open its door for you. Always remember Che Guevara used to say: “It is better to die standing than to live on your knees.” Your career has been built by you. Just like you should not end your life if your boyfriend dumps you, you should immediately shame your boss for harassing you and leave the job.
Many compromise and look for other jobs before taking to task the person who is the reason behind her quitting, and my dear friends, MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE DONE THIS. To them I ask, how can you be sure that your next boss will not be the same, unless you find yourself under a woman but God help you if her tastes are different!!
This is a very small world and trust me a loud voice reaches quite far. So, if you just gather the guts and shame your tharki boss, trust me, the next one will not dare to come anyway near you.
And finally, I think you have been brought up by your parents and not by society. So just give a damn about what society thinks and just hit his nuts and trust me, someone or the other would be beside you.
I finally turn to you, the boss, who takes advantage of your female workers. If you have a daughter, then someone out there is doing the same things with your daughter what you are doing with someone else’s daughter. If you do not have a daughter then do not take revenge of what your mother has faced from her boss or her husband. Do not want to bad mouth your parents but they say that a fruit shows how good the tree is.
So the next time you think you have the license to take a woman employee for granted, just pick up your job letter and read and re-read, it does not mention this license. And if still it’s hard to stop your juices from flowing, go tie a rubber band around it.
And to those friends of mine and the million others of the like, please raise your voice. Your silence often gives a lot of innocent men the same name as your bosses. Because this world loves to genaralise!

IS IT ISLAM THAT KILLS?

Terrorism, in the 21st century, is something that has not only shaken up all parts of the world but also has it brought bad name to the Muslims. People all the world over abuse the religion for giving birth to people who spread terror and kill innocents. And on top of that a new radical Muslim group springs up every now and then. But let us think about it rationally. Does all these incidents actually make the religion or so to say the the Quran a piece of shit? Consider a group of people forming a new radical group going about saying that their religion asks them to kill people, that their religion asks them to fight against the innocent. Does that mean we start believing that there is problem in the religious scripts of that religion? Anybody can claim anything, but we have been gifted with a mind which is supposed to be used rationally and not just follow arbitrary nincompoops. It is also baffling to see that whenever a terrorist attack takes place the media all over uses th...

Commonly used short forms and their meanings

Ever since the days of our arboreal ancestors, mankind has been trying to reduce effort by innovating new necessities. And the result is in front of our eyes today. We want pizza, it gets delivered to our place. We want grocery, it gets delivered to our place at our convenient time. This urge of humankind to reduce effort has actually helped us in many ways. Like, if our ancestors would not have made use of crude stone tools, we wouldn’t have been able to make the sophisticated equipment we used these days. Thus, everything undergoes change. However, in today’s world, we tend to forget willingly the etymology of the transformed form. Taking the point of reducing effort to another level, let me take you through the commonly-used abbreviations. We all use them, though in our childhood, our teachers used to scold us for using them, nonetheless we used them for our convenience. Using an abbreviation in this fast-paced life is okay but not knowing the origin of the same may pr...

Tum Kitne Afzal Maroge, Ghar Ghar Se Afzal Niklega!

It is hard to trace the origin of sloganeering or probably beyond my capability to do so but if we consider the broad meaning then sloganeering is an act to unite like-minded people, incite them and instill within them a sense of oneness, predominately for some cause. If I am not very wrong, if so I can stand corrected, sloganeering was made famous during the early days of uprising by rebels against the tyrannical rulers. In India, during the struggle for freedom, slogans were made to get people together and rise up against the British Raj. "Inkalaab Zindabaad" was one among many that was probably the most used and by far the most useful slogans used during those days. The two words simply mean "Long live Revolution" but the greater meaning had a great impact in the minds of millions who dreamt of waking up in a free country. Inkalaab Zindabaad was so famous that even in today's generation we use it almost anytime we wish to show our dissent towards s...
