At the launch in Delhi |
New
Delhi: Mercedes-Benz GLS, face lifted the GL and
launched it with a new name in the Indian market on Wednesday for Rs 80.38 lakh
(ex-showroom, Pune). This car has come at a time when Mercedes has been
enjoying a lovely year in India.
Its sale from April 2015 to March 2016 has
been 13,558 units, the highest ever. This has given them the confidence to
launch an SUV, which will not be sold in Delhi but the company expects a good
sales figure.
Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO,
Mercedes-Benz India called the GLS, ‘The S-Class of SUVs’ and he is not very
far of the mark. The GLS comes with a three litre V6 diesel engine that
produces 258 bhp and 620 Nm of peak torque. This beast of an engine is attached
to a nine speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels with
the power distribution is controlled by the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive
system.

India is a very important market for
Mercedes and that can be understood by the fact that the GLS will be
manufactured at the Mercedes plant in Chakan, Pune. This will help keep the
price of the car low and more importantly help Mercedes achieve better numbers.
Looking at the car, one will know instantly
that it is a Mercedes. The front grill has the brand's Three Pointed Star,
which cannot be easily missed. The headlamp cluster borrows from its smaller
siblings the GLE and GLE Coupé. The bonnet features two power domes and
highlights the powerful appearance of the GLS.
On the interior, the GLS offers the S-Class
standard among SUVs. The S-Class is known for its refinement and the GLS
provides just that. The car can seat seven people at ease and has the latest
safety features like, PRE-SAFE system, BAS Brake Assist, the electronic
all-wheel drive traction system 4ETS, ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist and cruise
control. Optimal protection potential is provided by the passive occupant
protection systems together with the "electronic crumple zones" of
the assistance systems and the intelligent body design. Adaptive, two-stage
airbags for driver and front passenger, side bags for driver, front passenger
and the middle row seats (combined thorax/pelvisbags) and windowbags across all
three seat rows are also part of the standard specification. In addition, the
GLS is fitted with three-point safety belts on all seven seats.
If you found the above paragraph boring,
just know that the car will keep you safe.

The Interior of the new Mercedes GLS |
Coming back to the interior, you get a high-quality
elegant interior with a new heated 3-spoke multifunction nappa leather steering
wheel with steering wheel gearshift paddles, 12 function keys and an airbag
cover in nappa leather, instruments with modified details as well as a
redesigned instrument panel with semi-integrated colour media display.
A unique and first ever feature that
enhances the environment inside the GLS is the Apple CarPlay. It provides
options to make calls, listen to music, send and receive text messages and also
provides access to select third-party apps that are approved by Apple CarPlay.
Unfortunately the car does not come with a
smaller engine and will not be sold in the NCR region as per the rules laid
down by the Honourable Supreme Court of India.
